Homosexuality means that someone calls himself or herself homosexual (gay) and presents himself or herself like that to other people. This is his/her sexual identity.
Most often, this also means that he/she:
- feels attracted to people of the same sex in a romantic and/or sexual way (feelings) and;
- has sex with people of the same sex (behaviour).
Someone’s feelings, behaviour and identity are not always the same. For example: a man who does not consider himself to be homosexual (identity) can feel attracted to another man (feelings) but not act upon it (behaviour).
Men and women can be homosexual. Men who are attracted to other men are called homosexuals; women attracted to other women are called homosexuals or lesbians. Some people feel attracted to both men and women. They are called bisexuals.
Sometimes people have homosexual feelings during a certain period in their life.
Why people are homosexual
It is not known why people are homosexual. But it is certain that:
- Being homosexual is not a choice. It happens naturally.
- Homosexuality is not hereditary like other characteristics, for example the colour of your hair or eyes.
- It exists in all countries and cultures. In Europe, discrimination against homosexual people is forbidden by law. According to the law, no-one is allowed to treat people differently, exclude them or restrict them because of their homosexuality.
Telling you are homosexual
A person should decide for himself or herself whether he/she wants to be recognized as a homosexual or lesbian by other people.
Telling someone that you are homosexual:
- It is often not easy and it takes a lot of courage.
- It can be a relief to tell other people. You do not have to hide any longer. First talk to people who you think will accept you as you are. Some people, however, have difficulties accepting homosexuality. Be aware that reactions at first will not always be positive.
- You do not have to tell other people you are homosexual. If you believe it is not safe to tell, then you do not have to.
Same-sex marriage
People of the same sex can have a relationship. In some European countries, they can get married (for example in Belgium) or have a registered partnership (for example in Germany).
